Zinedine Yazid Zidane ( (born 23 June 1972) is a retired French World Cup-winning footballer. Zidane played for club teams in France, Italy and Spain, and was the captain of the French national team. He is widely considered as one of the greatest players in the history of football. He was the iconic figure of a generation of French players that won the 1998 World Cup and 2000 European Championship. After a brief international retirement, Zidane returned to the national team in 2005 and captained France to the 2006 World Cup Final where he won the Golden Ball as the tournament's most outstanding player.

At club level he won the La Liga title with Real Madrid, two Serie A league championships with Juventus, and a UEFA Champions League, Intercontinental Cup, and UEFA Super Cup each with both aforementioned sides.. Zidane is alongside Brazilian striker Ronaldo, the only three-time FIFA World Player of the Year winners; Zidane also won the Ballon d'Or in 1998. He retired from professional football after the 2006 World Cup.

Ferguson has also had to contend with the news that Michael Carrick will be out for three weeks after seeing a specialist in London on yesterday about a foot problem, but Ferdinand's availability is a major boost as United embark on an important run of games. "Rio had a nightmare last season with injuries," Ferguson said.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has praised new signing Chris Smalling by saying that he is like Rio Ferdianand in most aspects. Smalling came to Old Trafford from Fulham and could make his first appearance for the club in the Community Shield against Chelsea on Sunday.

With Rio Ferdinand still struggling with injury problems the 20-year-old could be an important player for Ferguson this season, and the United boss believes that Smalling could be a great asset for the club in the future.

Arsenal’s biggest problems in the previous campaign were undoubtedly at the back as an inability to defend consistently as a team was exacerbated by the unsettling goalkeeping merry-go-round.

Unfortunately, just four days out from the season opener against Liverpool at Anfield, it appears as though those problems have been only partially addressed.

The exits of William Gallas and Sol Campbell have been balanced by the signing of wiry Laurent Koscielny from Lorient FC and the return of 6’4″ Johan Djourou from long-term injury, while the deadwood that is Mikael Silvestre and Philippe Senderos have also been released.

As things stand Arsenal are one center-back short of the four required to cover this area of the pitch and problems will emerge throughout the season if Wenger fails to fulfill his promise to address this.
